MLS Fantasy: Ranking the top 10 goalkeepers for 2019

Schuyler Redpath and I have reviewed the preseason games to date and have worked up a list of promising preseason prospects for each MLS Fantasy position.

What am I looking for?

Put simply, consistency with a defensive unit. That’s really the most important takeaway for a goalkeeper for preseason. Why not clean sheets? Two reasons. First, recoveries tend to be a better indicator of a higher fantasy score. Second, there is so much experimentation with both formations and attacking players that it’s hard to really get a good sense of the offensive pressure that a team can withstand during preseason.

That changes a little as MLS teams start to play each other in the closing weeks, but the fantasy point gap between goalkeepers is small, so you really just need a guy that is going to get close to 3,000 minutes.

What about price?

I’m a staunch believer that you don’t need to pay a premium price for a good goalkeeper. Several midrange keepers outscored their premium priced peers in 2018 and several others were within 30 points of the highest scoring keeper. It’s an easy way to shift some money into your offense and build your overall team budget. Now, here is my top 10 list of promising preseason fantasy goalkeeper prospects.
