Where would Erick "Cubo" Torres be if he wasn't playing soccer?
The Chivas USA star and native of Guadalajara, Mexico, came from humble roots to become a professional athlete, first with hometown club Chivas de Guadalajara and now in MLS. He even suggests he might have resorted to crime had he not found a career in soccer.
But more than simply survive as a soccer player, Torres has thrived, becoming the all-time leading Mexican-born scorer in MLS history and carrying the scoring load for his club. In September, the 21-year-old realized a dream — playing for the Mexican national team.
The latest episode of the Emmy-nominated series MLS Insider takes a closer look at Cubo: his background, his nicknames and his experience when he joined El Tri's senior squad for the first time in a pair of September friendlies.
Don’t miss the entire MLS Insider series, including the penalty-killing exploits of Nick Rimando, the MLS arrival of Jermaine Jones, a look at the importance of statistics in soccer, and the story of New York Red Bulls striker Bradley Wright-Phillips.
