HALL-OF-FAMER BOCANEGRA MEMBER OF RARE CENTURY TRIFECTA
Long-time U.S. national team defender and MLS veteran Carlos Bocanegra – also current Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director – was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame this week.
Bocanegra is just one of three players in U.S. soccer history to have appeared in 100 matches in both Major League Soccer and England’s Premier League, as well as having won 100 caps for the U.S. national team, according to Stats Perform.
Bocanegra played six seasons in Major League Soccer, stints with the Chicago Fire (2000-03) and Chivas USA (2013-14) wrapped around a decade in Europe, where he spent four seasons with Fulham FC in England (2004-08). Bocanegra is tied for 11th all-time in U.S. men’s national team history with 110 caps.
Bocanegra, along with Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard, are the only players to reach 100 appearances in both leagues as well as the U.S. national team.

INTER MIAMI’S MATUIDI JOINS PANTHEON OF MLS WORLD CUP WINNERS
Blaise Matuidi became the 12th winner of the FIFA World Cup to appear in a match in Major League Soccer history, with his debut for Inter Miami CF in their match against Nashville SC at Inter Miami CF Stadium on Sunday evening.
With the appearance of Matuidi – who won the World Cup with France in 2018 – a member of each of the last eight FIFA World Cup champions has now played in the league.

COLUMBUS CREW SC CONTINUE MARCH ON ONE OF GREATEST DEFENSIVE SEASONS
Columbus Crew SC are continuing on their path to make their 2020 campaign one of the greatest seasons defensively in Major League Soccer history.
Through their first 10 games, following their 3-0 win against FC Cincinnati at Mapfre Stadium on Sept. 6, Crew SC have allowed just two goals. That equals the fewest through a team’s opening 10 games of the season in MLS history, along with the LA Galaxy in 2010.

GOALKEEPERS MAKING MOVES UP MLS SHUTOUT LEADERBOARD
Staying with the defensive theme, a pair of goalkeepers continued their march up the all-time league shutout standings through their performances last weekend.
Inter Miami CF goalkeeper Luis Robles recorded a shutout for a second consecutive match – the first two in the club’s MLS history – in the goalless draw with Nashville SC on Sept. 6. It was the 74th shutout of Robles’s MLS career, eighth-most all-time – and he is now just one shutout behind Matt Reis at No. 7, and just two adrift of Zach Thornton at No. 6.
That same evening, New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson posted the shutout in his club’s goalless draw at D.C. United. The shutout was the 64th of his MLS career – moving him into a tie for 10th-most in league annals.

- The teams are meeting for the fourth time this season, their third match in the first phase of the continuation of the MLS season. Rudy Camacho scored the game’s only goal as the Impact put an end to TFC’s 18-game undefeated streak – one game shy of the all-time MLS record – on Sept. 1 at BMO Field; Alejandro Pozuelo converted a penalty kick for the game’s only goal in TFC’s win Aug. 28 at Stade Saputo.
- TFC are coming off a 3-2 defeat by Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Sept. 5, their second in a row. Alejandro Pozuelo scored his third goal of the season, his second in the last three games.
- The Impact win in the last meeting ended a four-game TFC winning streak in the series. The teams also met during group play in the MLS is Back Tournament as 20-year-old Ayo Akinola scored a hat trick – the third-youngest player in MLS history to score three goals in a game – leading Toronto FC to a 4-3 on July 16.
- The teams met in the final of the Canadian Championship last year – the seventh time in the last eight years they met in the tournament – the Impact winning the title in a penalty shootout after each team won 1-0 at home, the Impact on Sept. 18 in Montréal, and TFC on Sept. 25 in Toronto. It was the second time the Impact defeated TFC for the Canadian crown, also in 2014; TFC defeated Montréal for the second of their three titles in a row in 2017.

- Luis Robles recorded a second consecutive shutout for Inter Miami, the first two of the club’s history. Robles now has 74 career shutouts in MLS play, one behind Matt Reis for seventh on the all-time list.
- Atlanta United came back for a second consecutive draw, hitting for a late 1-1 tie with Orlando City SC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday evening. Adam Jahn hit for the stoppage-time equalizer, his first goal in MLS league play since Aug. 5, 2017.
- The teams met a week ago, reaching a goalless draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 2. It’s the second meeting in their club histories, both coming over a seven-day stretch.

- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Fafa Picault and Jesús Ferreira netted goals a minute apart early on, pacing FC Dallas to a 3-1 win Aug. 29 at Toyota Stadium.
- The teams met twice a season ago. Mason Toye netted the game’s only goal in second-half stoppage time as MNUFC claimed the victory on July 13 at Allianz Field; Brandon Servania capped a wild match with a late brace as FC Dallas took a 5-3 win Aug. 10 at Toyota Stadium.
- FC Dallas won both meetings between the clubs in 2018, without conceding a goal. FCD took a victory by the game’s only goal June 29 at TCF Bank Stadium, then won 2-0 at Toyota Stadium on Aug. 18. The teams split their two meetings in MNUFC’s inaugural season in MLS, each winning at home.

Darwin Quintero assisted on both goals, from Alberth Elis and Mauro Manotas; he has three goals and four assists over the last three games.
- The teams met twice a season ago. Alberth Elis netted a goal and added an assist and the Dynamo benefited from two own goals, taking a 4-1 win on March 30 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park; the teams then reached a 2-2 draw Aug. 17 at BBVA Stadium.
- The Dynamo win last year was their first in Commerce City since 2008, ending an eight-game home undefeated streak for the Rapids in the series (5-0-3).
- The Dynamo won the previous meeting between the clubs in Houston, a 2-0 win on June 9, 2018, which ended a two-game Rapids winning streak at BBVA Stadium.

- Real Salt Lake saw their three-game undefeated streak put to an end following a 4-0 loss to Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Sunday evening.
- LAFC weren’t able to build upon a first win in the continuation of play in the 2020 season, falling 3-0 to the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park.
- LAFC have won all four league meetings between the teams. The teams met twice a season ago: Walker Zimmerman scored the game-winning goals two minutes into second-half stoppage time, giving LAFC a 2-1 win March 23 at Banc of California Stadium, then Carlos Vela and Adama Diomande each netted goals as LAFC took the 2-0 victory Aug. 17 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
- The teams also met in the Knockout Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2018, with Real pulling off an upset with a 3-2 win at Banc of California Stadium. The teams met in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup a year ago, LAFC taking a 3-2 win in Sandy.

- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. They reached a goalless draw in the opening match for both teams at the MLS is Back Tournament on July 10.
- Sounders FC have a 10-game undefeated streak alive in the overall series. A 2-2 draw in the first meeting last year on April 24 ended a three-game Sounders FC winning streak at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC have come away with points on each of their five visits to San Jose (three draws and two victories), including a 1-0 win in their last visit last Sept. 29.
SOUNDERS FC:
Sounders FC lost at home for the first time in more than a year, since Aug. 4, 2019, a span of 10 games without defeat.
QUAKES:
Chris Wondolowski
has scored 26 goals from the penalty spot, third-most in MLS history (behind Jaime Moreno, 44; Landon Donovan, 31).

- Crew SC won a second consecutive game and recorded a third consecutive shutout, defeating FC Cincinnati 3-0 at Mapfre Stadium on Sunday evening. Gyasi Zardes scored a pair of goals, his second two-goal game this season, as Crew SC recorded an eighth shutout in 10 games this season, a fifth consecutive home shutout overall.
- The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Darlington Nagbe and Gyasi Zardes each scored a goal and added an assist as Crew SC eased to a 3-0 win Aug. 20 at Mapfre Stadium.
- The Fire are undefeated in their last six home meetings with Crew SC, with two wins and four draws, Crew SC’s last win at the Fire coming in 2015. Crew SC have a 10-game home undefeated streak alive in the all-time series. The Fire last won in Columbus on June 22, 2013.

was not forced to make a save in recording a fourth consecutive shutout in league play, his personal shutout streak now at 461 minutes, the third-longest in Crew club history. Room now leads MLS with six shutouts. … Crew SC are one of three teams in MLS history to have recorded eight shutouts in their opening 10 games of a season, along with KC 2000 and LA 2010 – both of those clubs also recorded shutouts in their 11th league contest. …
Pedro Santos
scored his first goal of the season and added an assist; it was the second time in his MLS career he had a goal and an assist in the same game (also last Sept. 29 vs. Philadelphia).

- New York City FC saw their three-game winning run come to an end but still stretched their undefeated streak to four games, playing to a goalless draw with D.C. United at Audi Field on Sunday evening.
- Sean Johnson recorded the shutout, his second in a row and fourth of the season, as D.C. United were held without a single attempt at goal, just the second time that has happened in MLS history (in 5,996 games all-time).

The Galaxy won 4-2 on May 27, 2017 at Earthquakes Stadium in the last match there – just their second victory in the last 18 regular season games in northern California, across four stadiums. The win in Carson last year was just the second there for the Quakes since 2012.
