Reigning MLS Defender of the YearLaurent Ciman was named to Belgium’s 23-man Euro 2016 roster on Sunday.
The Montreal Impact center back, who was also a MLS Best XI selection and 2015 MLS All-Star, was chosen by head coach Marc Wilmots as part of the team that will take part in the tournament in France, from June 10 to July 10. He will join the Belgium squad in Switzerland on Monday for training camp.
Ciman, who has started all 12 of the Impact’s matches in 2016, will miss at least two matches on international duty. Drawn into Group E, the Belgians will face Italy on June 13, the Republic of Ireland on June 18 and Sweden on June 22. Ciman has nine caps for Belgium and was on the roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
In 2015, he helped lead Montreal to the final of the CONCACAF Champions League and a playoff berth. In February, the 30-year-old signed a contract extension with the Canadian club through the 2018 season.
