The Montreal Impact reached the Canadian Championship semifinals for the eighth consecutive year, with a first-time meeting against Cavalry FC beginning Wednesday night at Stade Saputo.
The second leg will be played at ATCO Field in Foothills County August 14. The winner meets either Toronto FC or Ottawa Fury in the two-legged final next month.
Montreal Impact
The Impact survived a scare to beat York9 FC, 3-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round. Saphir Taider struck for a stoppage-time equalizer from the penalty spot in a 2-2 draw in the opening leg at York Lions Stadium and Ignacio Piatti made a triumphant return from injury by scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win in the second leg at Stade Saputo.
The Impact are looking to bounce back from a 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rapids Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Kei Kamara scored a hat trick, not including an own goal to put Montreal in front in the 18th minute. Trailing 4-1 at halftime, the Impact attempted to rally on consecutive goals by Maxi Urruti and Taider. But the Rapids added two more goals in the final 12 minutes to close out the nine-goal thriller.
Cavalry FC
Cavalry FC made history, becoming the first Canadian Premier League squad to defeat an MLS side, ousting the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1, on aggregate in the third qualifying round. After a scoreless draw in the opening leg, Cavalry FC won 2-1 at BC Place. Five minutes after Inbeom Hwang canceled out Jordan Brown's first-half goal, Dominick Zator scored the 72nd-minute winner
