Nashville SC have acquired defensive midfielder Anibal Godoy from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for $650,000 of General Allocation Money (GAM), the clubs announced Wednesday. Godoy will finish 2019 with the Quakes as the deal is effective Jan. 1.

Godoy, 29, joined the Quakes in 2015 and has made 99 appearances with the club, including 13 this season. He is currently out with an abdomen injury, though should be back soon.

“I can’t say enough about how pleased I am to have him in the group,” Nashville head coach Gary Smith said in a statement. “There’s so many reasons that we should all be not only as staff, technical and front office, but as fans as well, be absolutely delighted that we’ve got a player of this caliber coming into a brand-new group, and at such an early stage to build a team around and to add to other very bright and exciting players that we’re looking at.”

A Panamanian international, Godoy has made 97 appearances for his country. He was forced to miss the 2019 Gold Cup through injury.

“While Godoy’s trade value represents a new benchmark for our club, more importantly it underlines how we want to manage our roster in a proactive manner in the years to come with a succession plan in place ahead of all transactions,” Quakes GM Jesse Fioranelli said in a statement. “Anibal has been a great leader for us on and off the field and we wanted to ensure that the club and the player could seek a win-win situation while not negatively affecting the locker room."

Godoy joins David Accam, Derrick JonesCameron Lancaster and Daniel Ríos as the first players on Nashville's inaugural roster for 2020.
