TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade
Nashville SC have acquired attacker David Accam from Columbus Crew SC in exchange for $450,000 in allocation money ($350,000 in General Allocation Money and $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money), effective on January 1, 2020. Accam will remain with the Crew for the remainder of the 2019 season.
Accam, 28, was acquired by the Crew from the Philadelphia Union little more than a week ago. The Crew sent a total of $500,000 in allocation money and an international roster spot to Philly for the forward, who has four goals and two assists across nine appearances (four starts) between the Union and Crew this season.
“The 2019 season is a one-year runway for us to prepare for the 2020 MLS season, and our staff has been really thoughtful about how our roster will be constructed,” Nashville GM Mike Jacobs said in a statement. “The idea of adding players is not necessarily about simply finding ‘good players’, but rather about finding ‘players that are good for Nashville.’ The scouting and recruitment of prospects has been really diligent, and our staff have been very strategic about identifying players that we believe will enable us to pursue excellence.”
The Ghanian enjoyed his best MLS season in 2017 with the Chicago Fire, producing 14 goals and 8 assists, which spurred a trade to Philly. His lone full season with the Union wasn't as expected, as Accam had just one goal in 23 appearances (13 starts).
“As part of the several transactions at the close of the primary transfer window, this transaction not only benefits us for the 2019 season in having David a part of our attack on our roster, but it also allows us the long-term roster flexibility by restoring significant allocation money for future use,” said Crew SC president Tim Bezbatchenko.
Accam is now the fourth player on Nashville's inaugural MLS roster, joining Derrick Jones, Cameron Lancaster and Daniel Rios.
“David is a very exciting player,” said Nashville head coach Gary Smith. “He has exceptionally good pace, he’s shown throughout his career that he’s a good creator, able to get himself on the score sheet and be a difference-maker in front of goal. He is an incredibly exciting player for the club to have landed.”
