TRANSFER TRACKER:Roster Update
Left back Gabriel Somi and the New England Revolution have mutually agreed to part ways, the club announced Friday.
Signed in January 2018 from Ostersunds FK of the Swedish top flight, Somi made 14 appearances (12 starts) under former head coach Brad Friedel – all in 2018. He had yet to feature in an MLS game during 2019, though did play in the “Final Whistle on Hate” match May 15 against Premier League side Chelsea. Otherwise, Somi often failed to make the 18-man game day roster.
Originally born in Sweden, Somi has made one appearance for Syria’s national team.
The move now gives the Revolution one natural left back on their roster in Edgar Castillo, though 2019 SuperDraft first-round selection DeJuan Jones has featured some at the position. Longtime left back Chris Tierney retired after 2018, ushering in a new era at the position for New England.
The departure also opens an international roster spot and senior roster spot for the Revolution.
