After starting all 34 of the New England Revolution's matches last season, midfielder Carles Gil has missed the first two games of 2020 with a foot injury. But he's almost back.
The reigning MLS Newcomer of the Year returned to full training this week after missing preseason, as he builds match fitness and game sharpness. He hasn't yet been ruled out of New England's game Sunday against the Portland Timbers (1:30 pm ET | MLS Live on ESPN+ in the US, on DAZN in Canada).
“I feel good. This is only the third practice that I’ve had with the team, but I feel good coming off the injury,” Gil told reporters via an interpreter. “We’ll take it day by day, little by little, and see how everything goes when the game gets closer.”
Gil, a Designated Player alongside Gustavo Bou and Adam Buksa, added that he hopes to approach top shape in a week.
“He was certainly a key player with our team last year, and we’ve missed not having him,” head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena said. “We missed him in preseason and up until today, so it’s great to have him back and hopefully he can keep making progress.”
The Spaniard was a massive success in 2019, posting 10 goals and 14 assists while leading the Revs to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs after the team endured a slow start to the season.
So far without Gil, New England have lost to the Montreal Impact and drawn their home opener against the Chicago Fire.
