Frank Lampard was voted MLS Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters for Week 26 of the MLS season, the league announced on Tuesday.
Lampard scored two late goals to give NYCFC a dramatic 3-2 win over D.C. United at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night. The English midfielder now has 11 goals in 16 matches this year for NYCFC, who reclaimed their spot atop the Eastern Conference with the win against United.
Lampard, who was honored by NYCFC and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio at the match for reaching 300 career goals, sparked City’s late flurry with an excellent goal in the 85th minute. He collected a loose ball in the box and slammed a shot inside the far post to give NYCFC a 2-1 lead.
D.C. equalized just moments later, only for Lampard to find the winner in second-half stoppage time. After making a quick run into the box, Lampard shimmied past a defender to free himself for a left-footed shot that beat D.C. ‘keeper Bill Hamid and found the back of the net to give NYCFC a 3-2 win.
The award is Lampard’s second Player of the Week honor of the season – he also won in Week 21.
NYCFC will return to action on Saturday, when they take on the New England Revolution (8 pm ET, MLS LIVE) at Gillette Stadium.
