New York Red Bulls 2, CD Olimpia 0 | CCL Round of 16 Recap

2018 CCL - Mark Rzatkowski - New York Red Bulls - Olimpia

The New York Red Bulls became the latest MLS team to reach the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, after beating Honduran side CD Olimpia 2-0 at Red Bull Arena on Thursday to win the series 3-1 on aggregate.

The first half was entertaining on both ends, with both sides eager to race upfield and put numbers into the final third, but the final product was lacking. Bradley Wright-Phillips found the breakthrough in the 54th minute, making a solo run with the ball and hitting a rare long-distance shot past Olimpia goalkeeper Donis Escober. Moments later, the Red Bulls were fortunate as Diego Reyes missed a wide-open net for Olimpia. 10 minutes after the opening goal, Sean Davis added an insurance tally, as his deflected strike beat Escober to make it 2-0 on the night.

Goals

  • 54' - RBNY - Bradley Wright-Phillips
  • 64' - RBNY - Sean Davis

Three Things

  • The Big Picture: The big news coming out of the game is that the Red Bulls are in the final eight in the CCL, and will be facing Liga MX outfit Club Tijuana in the next round. It won't be easy, but the Red Bulls put in the best overall performance by an MLS team in the CCL this year to date in this match, and have a Week 1 bye in MLS, so they will get more time to fine-tune before their league opener.

  • Moment of the Match
: The goals were obviously important, but the turning point was Reyes missing the sitter a few minutes after Wright-Phillips' goal. Had he scored there, it would have been 1-1 in the game and 2-2 on aggregate, with the series completely even. Instead, the Red Bulls weathered the storm and closed out the game.

  • Man of the Match: Tyler Adams has been the hyped Red Bulls Homegrown midfielder, and while he put in a good shift, Davis also impressed, active on both sides of the ball and grabbing a goal to wrap up the result.
