Pediatric hospital visits have always been an off-the-field highlight of a season for Alex Muyl. That has continued, at least virtually, for the New York Red Bulls midfielder despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“As you start to talk and get to know each other, there's genuine moments of connection and laughs, and I think those are the moments that really stick out to me,” Muyl told FOX News. “Those instances where you can just talk as people, I think that's the most meaningful part.”
Muyl and his teammates recently had that opportunity, speaking to pediatric patients at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital in Neptune, N.J.

On the other end of one of the video calls was 15-year-old Jaden Lucien, a lifelong Red Bulls fan battling kidney disease.
“My son was sick in bed and hardly talking to anyone and when he got on that video call, he was suddenly wide awake,” Jaden’s mother, Ashley Lucien, said. “For that hour that he spoke to Alex [Muyl], nothing else existed for him. He was just a kid with a really great opportunity to talk to a really cool player from his favorite team.”
Muyl, a New York City native, said the feeling was mutual. It’s a responsibility as a professional athlete he takes very seriously.
