One day before his Seattle Sounders kick off the 2017 Cascadia Cup against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Nicolas Lodeiro won a different sort of rivalry match-up, edging out Portland Timbers attacker Darlington Nagbe to win AT&T MLS Goal of the Week for Week 6.
Lodeiro won the honor for his excellent strike in Seattle’s 1-1 draw at San Jose last Saturday, a 20-yard volley following a blocked Clint Dempsey free kick that snuck through traffic and slid inside the left post to give the Sounders a 1-0 lead in the 84th minute at Avaya Stadium.
The tally took home 47 percent of the Goal of the Week vote, with Nagbe finishing second with 33 percent. Sporting Kansas City’s Gerso Fernandes finished third with nine percent, while Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco (8 percent) and New York City FC’s David Villa (3 percent) rounded out the voting.
Lodeiro now has two goals and one assist in five matches this season. The Uruguayan and his Sounders teammates will take on the rival Whitecaps at BC Place on Friday night (10 pm ET; MLS LIVE in the US | TSN in Canada).
