Gideon Baah's star-crossed MLS career has suffered another setback.
The New York Red Bulls defender broke his tibia in Sunday's 0-0 draw with the Portland Timbers and will miss four to five months of action, the club revealed on Monday.
The Ghanaian center back was RBNY's most prominent offseason acquisition, but has missed large chunks of the season to injury, first via a hamstring strain sustained in March and now via Sunday's break, which occurred 22 minutes into the match. Baah's latest injury is the same to befall his backline colleague Chris Duvall last year.
“To have this happen to him is painful for everyone,” head coach Jesse Marsch told Red Bulls communications specialist Eric Giacometti of Baah's injury.
The Red Bulls backline was ravaged by injury earlier in the season, but seemed to be returning to full health of late. Damien Perrinelle made his 2016 debut in relief of Baah on Sunday, while Duvall and Ronald Zubar are also available for selection. Aurelien Collin returns to the mix for Wednesday's visit by Orlando City SC after serving a suspension for yellow-card accumulation. The likes of Tyler Adams, Justin Bilyeu and Connor Lade offer Marsch further options, along with RBNY's USL team.
Marsch has previously expressed a desire to shop for reinforcements in the current transfer window, but was believed to be primarily focused on acquisitions in midfield and attack.
