To say Frank Lampard got his New York City FC career off to an uneven start would be a massive understatement.
The first signing in club history, Lampard remained on loan with English Premier League club Manchester City until midway through the club’s inaugural season in 2015, then missed significant time due to injury after he arrived in New York.
He hoped to turn things around quickly in 2016, but another injury, this one to his calf, kept him sidelined for the first two months of the regular season. After an ignominious debut (his first appearance of the year came in the final 15 minutes of NYCFC’s 7-0 home loss to the New York Red Bulls), Lampard has turned things around nicely. He started both of City’s last two matches, scoring in both to help NYCFC to a pair of wins.
The past couple of weeks have gone well for Lampard, but they were built on months of lonely work in the gym. NYCFC, who will take on the Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium again on Sunday (12 pm ET; ESPN in the US, TSN4 in Canada), published a video piece on Friday detailing Lampard’s recovery, offering perhaps the most in-depth look at the English midfielder since he joined NYCFC in July 2014.
