TRANSFER TRACKER: Signing
Bradley Wright-Phillips is switching coasts.
LAFC announced on Friday they've signed the legendary now-former New York Red Bulls forward, who scored 108 regular season goals for RBNY over seven seasons. Last week, Wright-Phillips announced on Twitter that he'll be joining reigning Supporters' Shield holders for the 2020 MLS season.
Wright-Phillips has been in preseason camp with LAFC after his contract expired with the Red Bulls following the 2019 season. There were reports of potential offseason interest from the New England Revolution, but ultimately a signing did not materialize.
The arrival of Wright-Phillips would add depth to an LAFC forward corps that will be without the services of center forward Adama Diomande due to a broken right foot.
Wright-Phillips, who turns 35 in March, scored a Red Bulls club-record 108 MLS regular-season goals and 126 across all competitions. In 2019, injuries limited the Englishman to just 1,098 minutes on the pitch, spread across 24 appearances (nine starts). He scored two goals.
In each of the previous five seasons, he scored no fewer than 17 goals in a season. Wright-Phillips won the MLS Golden Boot in 2014 and 2016 with 27 and 24 goals scored, respectively.
In 2018, he became the fastest player in MLS to record 100 league goals and the first to score 20 goals or more in three different seasons.
He was named to the MLS Best XI twice (2014, 2016), he's a two-time MLS All-Star (2014, 2018) and he's also the first player in MLS history to notch 20 or more goals in at least three different seasons.
Before arriving in MLS, Wright-Phillips played for several clubs in his native England. After graduating from the Manchester City academy and playing for the club until 2006, he moved to Southampton, Plymouth Argyle, Charlton Athletic and Brentford.
