Severe rainstorms prompted a weather delay in a US Open Cup Round of 16 matchup Tuesday night at MAPFRE Stadium between Columbus Crew SC and Atlanta United.
The delay arrived in the 75th minute with Atlanta leading, 3-2. The Open Cup clash eventually resumed played at 9:27 p.m., ending a 48-minute break.
Atlanta built their lead on the strength of a brace from Brandon Vazquez, giving the striker four goals in the tournament. Miles Robinson scored the Five Stripes' other on a corner kick in the 14th minute for his first professional goal.
Taking advantage of sloppy conditions, the Crew twice clawed their way back, starting with David Accam’s strike atop the 18-yard box in the 40th minute. The other arrived in the 71st minute when a squared cross from substitute Waylon Francis squeezed under Brad Guzan for an own goal.
These Eastern Conference foes are no strangers to rain-soaked conditions, as the Crew won, 2-0, over Atlanta back on March 30 amid downpours. That game was also held in Columbus.
