Either Orlando City SC or New York City FC will book a first-ever trip to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals when the Eastern Conference foes square off in the quarterfinals Wednesday night at Exploria Stadium.
It's possible this one will need more than 90 minutes to decide a winner. Orlando City SC and NYCFC have played to a pair of regular season draws this season.
Orlando City SC
The Lions booked their second consecutive trip to the quarterfinals and third overall by defeating the New England Revolution, 2-1 in extra-time, June 19 at Exploria Stadium. After a scoreless 90 minutes, Benji Michel struck first for Orlando City six minutes after the restart. Tesho Akindele made it 2-0 in the 101st minute. Justin Rennicks gave the Revs a lifeline with a 117th-minute goal.
Orlando City SC are coming off a 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union Sunday at Talen Energy Stadium. Dom Dwyer canceled out Marco Fabian's early goal and Santiago Patino put the visitors up in the 81st minute. But Kacper Przybylko leveled in the 90th minute to earn a share of the points for the Union.
New York City FC
NYCFC's deepest U.S. Open Cup run continued with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over D.C. United at Audi Field in the Round of 16 June 19. After Wayne Rooney put the hosts in front, Alexandru Mitrita leveled in the 38th minute and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi scored what proved to be the winner three minutes later.
The Cityzens had their MLS-best 12-match unbeaten streak snapped Sunday by the Portland Timbers. Sebastian Blanco scored the lone goal in the first half as NYCFC suffered only their second defeat of the season and first at Yankee Stadium.
