The Philadelphia Union play their first preseason match of 2019 against their I-95 rivals the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, as the two Eastern Conference clubs continue their preparations in sunny Southwest Florida.
Philadelphia Union
The Union are earlier in their preseason cycle than RBNY, having only arrived in Florida on Monday after kicking off the year with mostly indoor workouts at their facilities in Pennsylvania. Philly are bedding in new arrivals like Aurelien Collin, Carlos Miguel Coronel and Sergio Santos as they gear towards their opening match of the MLS regular season on March 2.
New York Red Bulls
It's a different story for the Red Bulls, one of five MLS squads to gather earlier than most of their peers thanks to their involvement with Concacaf Champions League play. RBNY begin their 2019 campaign with a round-of-16 CCL home-and-home series vs. Atletico Pantoja of the Dominican Republic; that begins on Feb. 20 in the DR and the return leg takes place at Red Bull Arena on Feb. 27.
Currently based at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, the Red Bulls defeated Swedish side Elfsborg on Saturday, and on the same day announced their latest acquisition, Homegrown signing Omir Fernandez. They're also in the midst of a transfer-window drama swirling around star playmaker Kaku and would-be suitors Club America of Liga MX.
