Toronto FC and the Portland Timbers traded corner-kick goals in the first half of Saturday’s game at BMO Field, with one an early contender for Goal of the Week.
Portland center back Bill Tuiloma evaded his mark and smashed home a side-footed volley from 15 yards out, leaving TFC goalkeeper Quentin Westberg glued to his line. The equalizer in the 22nd minute simply was a stunner.
Tuiloma, from New Zealand, pulled off what most strikers dream of, never mind a center back whose responsibilities primarily come on the other end of the pitch.
The goal also served up Diego Valeri’s fifth assist of the year, as last years MLS Cup runner-up and Western Conference champions look to make it two wins in as many games. Valeri now has 70 assists during his MLS regular-season career.
