So the San Jose Earthquakes' ironman goalkeeper is not actually made of iron.
The Quakes' starting goalkeeper David Bingham, who had not missed a minute all season, was removed in the 45th minute of his side's road clash with Crew SC because of an apparent back injury. The injury seemed to occur without contact.
Bingham showed signs of discomfort even before he was checked out by San Jose's medical staff late in the opening stanza, but fought through the pain and remained on the field for a few minutes before asking for a substitution.
Bingham, who like Columbus midfielder Wil Trapp had to leave Saturday's game because of a knock, was replaced by debuting rookie Andrew Tarbell. The match was already 1-0 in Crew SC's favor at that point.
The injury could be a major blow for Bingham, who has been in recent US national team camps and was a candidate to be called in by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers vs. St Vincent & the Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago.
