Real Salt Lake defender Jamison Olave made dubious MLS history on Saturday night, when he became the league’s all-time leader in red cards after earning the 10th of his career in RSL’s 2-2 draw at Portland.
Olave was ejected in the 83rd minute of Saturday’s match after striking Timbers forward Fanendo Adi in the face in the box. Adi buried the ensuing penalty kick to pull Portland level with RSL, who finished the match with nine men after captain Kyle Beckerman was shown a straight red in the first half.
Olave, who now has four red cards in his last 20 league matches, is the only active player in the top six of MLS’s all-time red card standings. Clint Mathis is second on the list with nine reds, Colorado Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni is in third with eight and four former players – including ex-New York Red Bulls manager Mike Petke and current RSL assistant coach Tyrone Marshall – were tossed seven times in their MLS careers.
