Report: Alejandro Bedoya in advanced talks to join Philadelphia Union

With the summer transfer window closing on Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Union might be gearing up for a deadline-day stunner.

On Monday night, ESPN's Marc Stein reported that the club is "in advanced talks" to bring US national team midfielder Alejandro Bedoya to MLS.

The Union nearly clinched Bedoya's signature at this same time a year ago, only for his French club, Nantes, to reportedly pull out of the deal at the close of the 2015 summer window.

The Bedoya-to-MLS rumors resurfaced in January with SuperDraft day chatter linking him with a potential move to the Colorado Rapids.

If Bedoya winds up with the Union, he will need to go through the Allocation Ranking process as one of 30 names on the Allocation Ranking Player List. The Chicago Fire currently hold the No. 1 spot in the Allocation Ranking with Philadelphia sitting behind them at No. 2.

The 29-year-old has never played in MLS, emigrating to Scandinavia after finishing his college career at Boston College. He played in Sweden (Orebro SK and Helsingborgs IF) and in Scotland (Glasgow Rangers) before landing with Nantes in 2013.

Bedoya has 53 caps and two goals with the US national team since debuting in 2010, featuring prominently as a regular starter at the Copa America Centenario in June.

The Union are currently in the middle of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, sitting in 4th place with 30 points from 22 matches. Featuring the likes of the versatile Roland Alberg, skillful Brazilian star Ilsinho, playmaker Tranquillo Barnetta, goal-scoring winger Chris Pontius and target striker CJ Sapong, the Union are already tied for the fourth-most goals scored in MLS with 36.

As has often been the case with the USMNT, Bedoya could potentially line up anywhere in the Union midfield -- deep in central midfield or at either of the wing positions.

Thus far in the summer window, the Union parted ways with Vincent Nogueira and added Homegrown midfielder Derrick Jones.
