Former FC Dallas midfielder and US youth international Alejandro Zendejas has reportedly resigned from the US national team as part of his recent move to Liga MX giants Chivas.
ESPN FC’s Tom Marshall reported on Wednesday that Chivas head coach Matias Almeyda confirmed that the 18-year-old Zendejas, who completed his move from Dallas to Guadalajara on June 24, would give up his standing as a US international to join the club.
Chivas have a policy of fielding only Mexican players. Zendejas, who signed with FC Dallas as Homegrown player in October 2014, has a Mexican passport but has represented the US on the youth level, playing every minute for the Under-17 national team at last year’s U-17 World Cup and recently earning a call-up to the U-20 national team.
Chivas have signed other players who have represented the US on youth levels in the past. One such player, Juan Pablo Ocegueda, gave up his status as a US international while on loan to Chivas in 2013, but returned to the US setup after leaving the club, playing four times for the US U-23s in 2014.
Zendejas made eight MLS appearances with FC Dallas last year, but did not play for the club this season before moving to Chivas.
