The planned MLS franchise in Miami may be another couple years and a stadium away from coming to fruition, but franchise owner David Beckham is apparently already lining up some key on-field personnel.
According to a report out of Spain, Beckham has selected Roberto Carlos to be coach when the team begins play. The report suggests Carlos is interested, but is also courting interest from Real Madrid to work in their youth system
Carlos, a former Brazil left back, currently serves as player-manager for the Delhi Dynamos in the Indian Super League after coaching stints for Sivasspor and Akhisar Belediyespor in Turkey, as well as Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia.
The report, which cites unnamed sources, said former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes was Beckham’s first choice, but he is looking at Carlos to make in-roads to Miami’s prevalent Spanish-speaking community.
Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who has long been rumored to be contemplating a move to Miami once the team gets up and running.
After months of initial struggles finding a viable site for the stadium that will serve as home to Beckham’s Miami MLS team, Beckham’s group purchased the land needed on Thursday to move forward with their plans, a milestone for the long-awaited franchise.
