UPDATE (8/21): Magnus Eriksson is officially headed back to Sweden, after weeks of reports in his native country indicated he could be leaving the San Jose Earthquakes for his former club, Djurgardens IF. The two clubs formally announced the deal on Friday, with the Earthquakes receiving an undisclosed transfer fee.
“When Magnus arrived from Djurgardens in 2018, he had left a lasting impression in Sweden,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli in a team statement. “After two and a half years with us, we feel he has done the same as he now returns home to be closer to his family. As we look back, we realize we learned a lot about ourselves during his time with the club. Together we grew in confidence, courage and tenacity as a team and Magnus had a big part in that. Thank you, tack själv, Magnus!”
Eriksson has earned the captain’s armband from head coach Matias Almeyda, helping San Jose reach the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back Tournament. He has 13 goals and 14 assists in 69 matches since arriving in December 2017 as a Designated Player. No longer a DP in his later time with the Quakes, Eriksson often featured centrally and flanked by wingers Vako and Cristian Espinoza, both of whom hold that label for San Jose.
REPORT (8/20):Magnus Eriksson’s days in a San Jose Earthquakes uniform could be numbered, according to a report from Swedish reporter Daniel Kristoffersson.
Eriksson joined San Jose for the 2018 MLS season from Swedish side Djurgardens IF, and now Kristoffersson reports that the 30-year-old attacker is on his way back to the Allsvenskan side. The Earthquakes would reportedly stand to earn a transfer fee for Eriksson, with the deal possibly wrapping up by next week.
Before joining the Earthquakes, Eriksson co-led the Allsvenskan with 14 goals in 2017 while playing for Djurgardens. He’s also earned one cap for Sweden – it came during a January 2014 friendly against Moldova – and twice won the Allsvenskan while playing for Malmo FF.
