TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
After a rough start, the Matias Almeyda era in San Jose has taken an upward trajectory in recent weeks, and now the Earthquakes are reportedly considering a bold move for one of Mexico's top defenders.
According to Quakes beat reporter Joel Soria, Almeyda is tracking center back Oswaldo Alanis, who's currently at Spanish second-division side Real Oviedo and could be open to a summer move elsewhere. Alanis played under Almeyda at Chivas Guadalajara, where they won the 2018 Concacaf Champions League, the 2017 Liga MX Clausura title and two Copa MX trophies together.
Alanis, 30, moved abroad last summer after the resolution of a prolonged dispute with Chivas and signed with La Liga club Getafe. He then departed the club after only a few weeks due to a disagreement between the club's president and its technical staff. Last year transfer rumors briefly linked him to LAFC.
He eventually landed at Oviedo, who currently sit eighth in the Segunda Division standings. They could yet find their way into La Liga if they can climb into the top six and successfully navigate Spain's promotion playoff system.
In an interview earlier this month Alanis expressed openness to a return home to Mexico, as well as other career options. He noted that he's "open to all possibilities" and that "life is to face the challenges that arise, and choose the one that best suits you."
