Portland TimbersHomegrownMarco Farfan is exploring an eligibility switch from the country of his birth – the United States – to his family’s ancestral homeland, Mexico, according to a report from FOX Deportes analyst Mariano Trujillo.
A left back who’s made 16 MLS appearances (10 starts) since signing his HGP deal in October 2016, Farfan has been called into U.S. youth national team camps before, most recently a U-19s camp run by Brad Friedel – now coach of the New England Revolution – in February 2017.
The youngest signing in Timbers history and the club’s first Homegrown to see MLS minutes, Farfan, 19, is the son of Mexican immigrants and has spoken of his experiences growing up surrounded by Mexican soccer culture.
He told American Soccer Now last year that he was open to representing either nation at international level, saying, “If the opportunity comes right now with Mexico for the youth national teams, I'd probably take it to see what it's like and see the differences between the U.S. and Mexico.”
