TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
After spending the first nine years of his MLS career on the East Coast, Chris Pontius may be coming home to sunny California.
Pontius — a Southern California native who starred collegiately at UC Santa Barbara, where he won the 2006 national championship — could sign a free-agent deal with LA Galaxy, according to a tweet from soccer reporter Paul Tenorio.
The 30-year-old MLS veteran spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Union, revitalizing his career in 2016 with 12 goals and six assists to win MLS Comeback Player of the Year honors and help the Union make the playoffs for the second time in club history. But despite remaining one of head coach Jim Curtin’s favorite options on the wing last season, he only finished with two goals in 2,253 minutes — both of which came in the same game.
Pontius, who made his first five US national team appearances last year under former LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena, previously spent seven up-and-down seasons with D.C. United, enjoying an All-Star season in 2012 but struggling with injuries for much of his tenure there.
