Atlanta United is seriously interested in signing Mexican international Andres Guardado, according to reports from ESPN’s John Sutcliffe and SI’s Grant Wahl.
Sutcliffe reported in May that Atlanta is interested in the PSV Eindhoven midfielder, who was suspended for Mexico’s win against Jamaica on Thursday after picking up two yellow cards in El Tri’s opening victory against Uruguay. Sutcliffe also reported that Atlanta are interested in another high-profile Mexican international, Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela.
Wahl built on that reporting on Thursday, noting that Atlanta have been informed that they would have to pay Guardado between $3.5 and $4 million per year to acquire him. They would also have to send a transfer fee to PSV, where Guardado is under contract for two more years.
Guardado, who scored the lone goal in Mexico’s 1-0 pre-Copa America win against Paraguay in Atlanta in May, helped PSV to the Dutch Eredivisie title last season. He has 24 goals in 127 career appearances for Mexico and represented El Tri at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
Atlanta will join MLS next season. The club signed their first Homegrown Player on Thursday, when they added 15-year-old US youth international Andrew Carleton.
