Brand-new Designated Player signing Carles Gil made an immediate impact for the New England Revolution in their preseason match on Friday, assisting on the Revs’ opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Czech champions Victoria Plzen in Marbella, Spain.
Gil played in Cristian Penilla in the 35th minute for the game’s opener, and Brian Wright doubled New England’s advantage in the 73rd after good setup work by HomegrownsIsaac Angking and Diego Fagundez.
But Plzen roared back to snatch two goals in the final eight minutes of regulation time, one from the penalty spot, and put a bit of a damper on the Revs’ performance.
Coach Brad Friedel started two distinct lineups in each half; this was the second match of the Revolution’s preseason, the first a 0-0 draw with China’s Shanghai Shenhua FC on Thursday.
