Perhaps Romain Alessandrini is saving his best for last in 2019.
The LA Galaxy winger has been back training the past few weeks after missing most of the season with a knee injury, and Galaxy head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto says he could feature for Sunday's Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs Round One clash at Minnesota United (8:30 pm ET | ESPN in US; TVAS, TSN4 in Canada).
"Romain is training very hard and maybe we could use him for 30 minutes," Schelotto said to reporters during training on Thursday. "I don't know if he's ready for 90."
Alessandrini had been a consistent presence for the Galaxy his first two seasons, playing at least 26 games and scoring 13 and 11 goals, respectively, each season, while also contributing regularly in the assist column. But this year, he played in the season opener and was forced out in the opening 20 minutes due to injury, missing the next two games. Upon his return, the Frenchman played the next four games, but suffered the knee injury in that fourth clash and was again substituted out early in the first half.
He underwent knee surgery to repair his meniscus in April, the prognosis expecting him to be ready to return sometime in September. While the projected return took a little longer than expected, the Galaxy hope Alessandrini can help them win their first playoff game since 2016.
