Russell Wilson and his wife, R&B star Ciara, were unveiled last month as one of 11 families joining the Seattle Sounders’ ownership group as founding owner Joe Roth departed the club. During the Sounders’ 4-3 win over the LA Galaxy on Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks’ starting quarterback joined commentators Stu Holden and John Strong during the FS1 broadcast to discuss his family’s motivation for joining the club.
“The energy's amazing here, it's as loud as it gets in here,” said the six-time Pro Bowler and 2013 Super Bowl champion, whose Seahawks share CenturyLink Field with the Rave Green.
“I always dreamed of owning teams. I've always loved trying to build cultures and trying to lead groups of people,” he added. “Ciara and I, we're in love with the Sounders. They've already had such an amazing culture, so much winning here, and whatever we can do to help to make sure that stays the case and continues to grow that way.”
Wilson, who noted that soccer was his first sport during childhood, pointed to a recent Sounders' community event that showcased the unifying power of the beautiful game in bringing together “people from all different races, all different socio-economic statuses." He vowed to support the club’s role in that process for years to come.
“The game of soccer is one of the greatest sports, if not the greatest sport, in terms of all around the world,” Wilson said. "So [we want] to be able to do that here and hopefully bring some of the best players in the world right here to Seattle.”
