The San Jose Earthquakes brought in another international reinforcement on Wednesday, announcing the addition of Panamanian international midfielder Alberto Quintero as a Discovery Signing on loan from Mexican second-division outfit Lobos BUAP for the 2016 season.
Quintero, a 28-year-old winger, has appeared more than 60 times for Panama's national team and has appeared for Los Canaleros at each of the past three CONCACAF Gold Cups, scoring five goals across those tournaments. At the 2015 Gold Cup, he started all six of Panama's matches, including the victory over the United States in the third-place game, where he scored a goal.
"Alberto is an electrifying player," said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle in a statement provided by . "He is technically very good, can score goals and also set them up and has a wealth of international experience.”
At the club level, Quintero got his start at Chorrillo in his native Panama before a three-year stint with three teams in the Spanish lower divisions. He returned to Chorillo and spent a stint on loan in Colombia before moving to the Mexican second division, where he most recently played with Lobos.
Quintero joins Panamanian international teammate Anibal Godoy on the Quakes' roster.
“I like the way he’s not afraid to take people on,” said Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear. “He has good international experience, and after talking to his Panama teammate [Anibal Godoy] here, we’re confident that he will fit into the club really well.”
Quintero joins Jamaican international Simon Dawkins, Argentine defender Andres Imperiale, free-agent addition Chad Barrett and Generation adidas goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell as additions to the Quakes roster so far this offseason.
