San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski captures MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 21

Chris Wondolowski points vs. RSL

He’s already the all-time leading scorer in Major League Soccer and Chris Wondolowski's latest two goals, which brings his remarkable total up to 165 for his career, helped bag the San Jose Earthquakes veteran forward MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 21 of the regular season.

In a match with massive playoff implications in the Western Conference Wednesday night, Wondo helped lead the Quakes to a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake. He opened the scoring in the 16th minute, tapping in the rebound of Cristian Espinoza’s shot that caromed off the post.

The 37-year-old then put the game away with his second goal in the 74th minute, latching onto Shea Salinas’ cross and firing home first-time just outside the six-yard box.

The ageless veteran now has six goals for the season in 11 starts. The Quakes remain above the playoff line in the Western Conference, with their 27 points from 21 matches leaving them with a three-point cushion ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps for the No. 7 spot on the table.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
