Matias Almeyda coaching the US men's national team?
If the opportunity ever presented itself, the current San Jose Earthquakes coach says he'd be interested.
"Obviously I'd love to [manage the USMNT], coaching a national team is the maximum that can happen to a coach ... and above all the United States and Mexico are national teams with a big future," Almeyda said on an interview with ESPN's Ahora o Nunca.
It's certainly some interesting food for thought for fans of the USMNT, which is currently managed by Gregg Berhalter.
Almeyda only has one MLS season under his belt, and while the Quakes wound up missing the playoffs, they were vastly improved under the new coach, who had them looking primed for a postseason berth for much of the season until a late collapse left them just outside the bubble.
The Argentine has plenty of pedigree, having managed his former club River Plate, Banfield and Chivas Guadalajara before making the move to MLS. Whenever MLS returns to play, it will be interesting to see if Almeyda can make his case by completing the turnaround of a Quakes team that was mired in mediocrity before his arrival.
Later in the interview, Almeyda also opined on the international exposure player and managers can get in MLS compared to Liga MX.
"Mexican football isn't shown in Europe," he said. "We went with Chivas and I have friends that follow me and if it wasn't for them being my friends they wouldn't have known anything of the history that Mexico has."
