For the fifth time in U.S. Open Cup play, the San Jose Earthquakes take on Sacramento Republic in the fourth round Tuesday night at Avaya Stadium.
The Quakes won, 2-1, in the fourth round of the 2014 competition and rallied from a two-goal deficit to level before eventually advancing on penalty kicks a year later.
San Jose Earthquakes
The Earthquakes enter the U.S. Open Cup on a four-match unbeaten streak in MLS play and have lost just one of their last nine league contests after a wild 2-2 draw with FC Dallas Saturday at Avaya Stadium.
Chris Wondolowski scored his club's eight consecutive goal in the last four games one minute into the second half, canceling out a Daniel Vega own goal in the first half. The Quakes went ahead on a goal by Magnus Eriksson following Video Review, but Francis Atuahene equalized 11 minutes later just 42 seconds into his MLS debut.
The Quakes hold a 17-14 all-time record in the U.S. Open Cup, including 15-3 against non-MLS teams.
Sacramento Republic
The USL Championship side had to walk a tightrope to navigate the earlier rounds of the competition, defeating Reno 1868 FC, 1-0, at home in the second round on a goal by Sam Werner eight minutes from full time. In the third round, the Quails needed extra time to down Fresno FC, 1-0, on a goal by Stefano Bonomo in the 123rd minute.
A year ago, Sacramento Republic upset the Seattle Sounders, 2-1, in extra time in the fourth round before falling to LAFC, 3-2, in the Round of 16.
