Sporting Kansas City are getting a proven striker in MLS and Krisztian Nemeth is getting a fresh start – and all in the same move.
Sporting acquired Nemeth in a trade with the New England Revolution, sending over $250,000 in Targeted Allocation Money, $100,000 in General Allocation Money, and their natural first-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for the player. The news was first reported by the Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell on Monday, before being announced by the teams.
Nemeth, 29, rejoins Sporting after spending the 2015 season there, where he scored 10 goals in 28 MLS regular season games and finished the joint-top scorer of the U.S. Open Cup that year, which Kansas City won.
After a stint in Qatar following his transfer from Sporting in 2016, Nemeth returned to MLS in Aug. 2017 with the Revolution. But he never found a regular spot in the lineup in New England across two seasons, scoring just one goal and three assists in 21 regular-season appearances, most of those coming off the bench.
“Krisztian is a player who has had success at our club and knows what goals we want to accomplish,” Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said in a team statement. “We are excited to welcome him back to Sporting KC, and his familiarity with our system will help him acclimate as we continue to push for playoff positioning.”
