TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed
Sporting Kansas City have re-signed longtime midfielder Roger Espinoza, the club announced Thursday. He was previously out of contract for the 2021 season.
Espinoza, 34, has spent his entire MLS career with SKC. He began his pro career in 2008 and starred for the club through 2012 before joining English side Wigan Athletic before returning to SKC in 2015. He has made 254 appearances in Kansas City.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to return to Sporting and compete for an MLS Cup,” Espinoza said in a club statement. “Kansas City is a special place where I have spent most of my career and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I’m proud to continue representing this club and playing for our fans.”
Espinoza is third in all-time appearances in Sporting KC history.
The veteran returns as another option in a busy midfield group, with fellow incumbents Ilie Sanchez, Gadi Kinda and Gianluca Busio as well as new signing Remi Walter. The club also announced in December they remain in negotiations with Felipe Gutierrez.
