Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Gutierrez has been voted the March MLS Player of the Month presented by EA SPORTS™ by members of the media after roaring out to the lead in the MLS Golden Boot race.
The 27-year-old Designated Player has scored five goals in his first five games with Sporting, helping his new club to the top of the Western Conference standings (3-1-1, 10 pts). Behind Gutierrez’s efforts, SKC also sit tied for the league lead with 10 goals scored and are unbeaten in their last four matches.
Three of Gutierrez's five goals were game-winners.
Following a 2-0 loss to New York City FC in Week 1, Gutierrez rebounded by scoring the opening and then game-winning goals in Sporting KC’s 4-3 victory at the Chicago Fire on March 10. In Week 3, Gutierrez scored in the 68th minute of a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, and he struck in the 57th minute of a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids in Week 4.
Gutierrez finished March by scoring in the third minute of SKC's 1-0 win over D.C. United last Saturday.
After leaving the game against D.C. with a hip injury, Gutierrez's status is questionable when Sporting Kansas City visit the LA Galaxy on Sunday evening (9 pm ET | FS1 - Full TV & Streaming Info).
The MLS Player of the Month presented by EA SPORTS is voted upon by a panel of select national media members in a process conducted by MLS Communications.
