On Sunday night, Goal.com reported that Sporting Kansas City had been offered "in the neighborhood" of $3 million for the services of striker Dom Dwyer from Greek Superleague champions Olympiacos.
Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes was quick to shoot down those rumors on Monday morning.
“There’s a lot of different moving parts in these deals — both for the club and the player,” Vermes told The Kansas City Star. “Everybody has to be comfortable with that. I would say right now, we’re not [comfortable] — neither of us are.
“So it’s simple: Based on what the structure and situation is, we’re not considering it at the moment.”
Dwyer has had a fine season in 2016, scoring 10 goals and adding two assists. He had one of his best games of the year on Sunday, scoring two goals against the Sounders in a 3-0 win.
Dwyer was selected 16th overall in the 2012 SuperDraft by Sporting, but was unable to break through until their run to the MLS Cup in 2013. He scored the series-winning goal in the Conference Championship against the Houston Dynamo and has scored the third-most goals of any player in MLS since 2014 with 44. He only sits behind the New York Red Bulls' Bradley Wright-Phillips (55) and the LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane (46).
He is married to US women's national team and FC Kansas City striker Sydney Leroux. The two are currently expecting their first child.
Olympiacos are the reigning champions of the Greek Superleague and have won the title in each of the past six seasons. They are slated to play Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, with the first game kicking off on Wednesday.
“When a transfer or deal is offered on a player, we’re always going to consider it in conjunction with the player. I’ve always maintained that with all the players at the club, so there’s nothing different with Dom,” Vermes said. “So did we listen? Sure. But it doesn’t mean we’re going to act on it.”
