Stejskal: Minnesota United waive winger Simon Dawkins

Simon Dawkins -- San Jose Earthquakes -- Solo shot

Minnesota United FC have waived winger Simon Dawkins, sources told MLSsoccer.com on Friday.

Minnesota picked Dawkins up via waivers earlier this month after his Designated Player contract was bought out by San Jose on Feb. 16. A source said the decision to waive Dawkins was not related to contract terms.

The other 22 MLS clubs can now claim Dawkins via waivers. Any team that claims him must offer Dawkins a contract within three days of being awarded his rights.

Dawkins, 30, made $800,000 in 2017, according to the MLS Players’ Union. A solid contributor for San Jose in 2011 and 2012, Dawkins re-joined the Quakes as a DP in 2016 following a three-year run in England. His second stint in the Bay Area was a disappointment, with Dawkins recording five goals and two assists in 29 appearances in 2016 before failing to tally a single goal or assist in 14 regular season matches last year.

Minnesota open their 2018 season on Saturday at San Jose (10:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE).
