MLS's weekend slate had plenty of exciting action, but one thing it lacked was Landon Donovan nutmegging Eddie Johnson.
That particular highlight was reserved for the second-annual “Zakuani & Friends Charity Match,” a star-studded game in Seattle to raise funds for former Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers winger Steve Zakuani’s Kingdom Hope foundation.
In addition to Donovan and Johnson, notable participants included American defender Oguchi Onyewu, retired Canadian midfielder and 2011 MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario and Seattle Seahawks kicker Steven Hauschka.
As it turned out, the second year of the charity event was twice as good, too.
“I’ve already been told we’ve more than doubled what we [raised] last year,” Zakuani told SoundersFC.com. “So that’s double the kids, double the programs, it’s going to stretch that money a long way. I think I can hope a lot more kids this coming year. So I’m happy.
“We’ll put at least two more kids through university and at least 10 through a soccer scholarship.”
Donovan and Zakuani’s team ultimately prevailed, but the kids who will benefit from the money raised are the biggest winners.
