Opening Weekend is in the books, with Seattle Sounders' fans likely ending up the happiest.
Their team dismantled the New England Revolution, last year's Eastern Conference champion, to the tune of 3-0 at CenturyLink Field. Clint Dempsey scored two goals, including this beautiful team goal where he ended up walking the ball into the net.
About 150 miles north, Jozy Altidore re-introduced himself to MLS with a bang, scoring two goals in Toronto FC's 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps. Altidore even showed some flair with this panenka to finish the game off against TFC's rivals.
Who else earned a spot on the latest Team of the Week? Read on to find out.
GK: Tyler Deric (Houston Dynamo) - Taking over for Tally Hall full-time, Deric displayed excellent reflexes throughout the second half to keep Columbus Crew SC off the scoreboard and secure the win.
D: Tyrone Mears (Seattle Sounders) – The EPL veteran showed why Sounders fan may not miss DeAndre Yedlin that much. The 32-year-old was a menace going forward including his cross on Obafemi Martins' goal.
D: Ike Opara (Sporting Kansas City) – After seeing his season cut short in 2014, Opara came out with a bang in 2015. He was strong in defense and scored Sporting KC's only goal.
D: Chris Schuler (Real Salt Lake) – : He and Jamison Olave looked good together on Olave’s return to RSL, but Schuler gets the nod for making the play of the game, blocking Michael Nanchoff’s shot in the box deep in second half stoppage time, to preserve the clean sheet.
D: Justin Morrow (Toronto FC) – The left back was integral in TFC's advances forward, including an assist on their second goal.
M: Mauro Diaz (FC Dallas) – This kid is fun. Ran the show for FCD with an impressive blend of flair, labor and thrust.
M: Michael Bradley (Toronto FC) – Sebastian Giovinco drew the eye with some of his ideas in the final third, but he was allowed to influence the game to that extent because Bradley (along with Benoit Cheyrou) put the screws to the Whitecaps after halftime.
M: Mix Diskerud (New York City FC) – Was the fulcrum for NYCFC all day, completing 96 percent of his passes while providing a beautiful finish to their lone goal.
F: Obafemi Martins (Seattle Sounders) – Goal, assist, the Nigerian did it all for Seattle in a dominating performance on Sunday night.
F: Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders) – Scored two of the easier goals that any forward will ever get in the Sounders' trouncing of the Revs.
F: Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC) – Scored two, led the line with muscle and generally looked like the “good Jozy” that hardly appeared for Sunderland last year. Confident and hungry.
Coach: Greg Vanney (Toronto FC) – Made the requisite second half adjustments to power Toronto FC over the Whitecaps.
Bench:Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Ronald Zubar (New York Red Bulls), Baggio Husidic (LA Galaxy), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Kaka (Orlando City SC), Jairo Arrieta (D.C. United)
