TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Loan
Just a day after MLSsoccer.com's Sam Stejskal reported Toronto FC's Spanish midfielder may be headed back to his native country, the move has become official.
The Reds on Wednesday announced Aketxe has been loaned to Spanish second-division side Cadiz CF for six months, where Aketxe also played for the second half of the 2016-17 season.
“At this time, we feel it’s in the best interests of both parties to do this loan,” said Toronto senior vice president of soccer operations Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “Adjusting to MLS is different for everyone and (Concacaf) Champions League added a new element in this particular situation compared to a standard preseason. We wish him the best during the loan.”
Aketxe, 24, made 14 appearances between MLS league play and the Concacaf Champions League after he joined Toronto on February 28 from Spanish club, Athletic Bilbao. He failed to make a significant impact in his minutes and struggled to find playing time behind Jonathan Osorio, Marky Delgado, Nicolas Hasler and Jay Chapman recently. He has played just 73 minutes since May 12.
