After a slow start to his MLS career, Philadelphia Union midfielder Borek Dockal is quickly emerging as one of the league’s top attacking players.
And now he has an award to show for it.
On Tuesday, Dockal was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 17.
The Czech Republic international carried the Union to a 4-0 rout of Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, scoring a pair of goals to snap the ’Caps six-game unbeaten streak.
Dockal opened the scoring with a left-footed strike from the right side of the box in the 24th minute, curling a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
He completed his first MLS brace in the 71st minute, collecting a pass from Alejandro Bedoya, sidestepping two defenders and once again beating Whitecaps goalie Brian Rowe.
Despite registering zero goals and one assist through his first five games in a Union uniform, Dockal now has five goals and six assists, leading the team in both categories.
His strong play has also helped push the Union (6-7-3) above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference ahead of a tough game at LAFC on Saturday (8 pm ET | TV & streaming info).
The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men's soccer in the United States and Canada.
