US national team center back Geoff Cameron is planning on eventually returning to MLS, according to comments he made in an interview with Goal USA’s Ives Galarcep.
Cameron, 31, told Galarcep that he sees MLS in his future, but that he’s in no rush to return to the league. The longtime US international began his career in MLS, playing 116 regular season games with the Houston Dynamo from 2008-2012 before making a summer move to English Premier League club Stoke City.
“It’s definitely in my plans, and my future, but I’m in no rush,” he said. “I’m happy playing in the best league in the world and challenging myself every single weekend. I have two more years left on my contract and we’ll see if there’s a few teams interested in the transfer window.
“It depends on what happens this season, if I re-sign with Stoke. It’s got to be the right move for me, but I’m definitely interested.”
According to Galarcep, Cameron said that some MLS teams inquired with Stoke about his availability this summer, but that no serious negotiations took place.
Cameron was an unused substitute in Stoke’s first two EPL matches, but went the full 90 in their two most recent contests – a 4-0 League Cup win against Stevenage on Aug. 23 and a 1-0 loss at Everton on Aug. 27. He also went the distance in the USMNT’s 6-0 win at St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a World Cup qualifier last Friday and is expected to start again in Tuesday’s home match against Trinidad and Tobago (8 pm ET; FS1, UniMas, UDN).
"It might be one of those things where [Stoke City] come to me by January and ask me to re-sign," Cameron said. "I have to look at all my options and see if it's a better option to stay at Stoke and re-sign or maybe head back to MLS. I honestly have no idea. I haven't thought about it yet."
