US women's national team debut new kits for Rio Olympics

The US women’s national team will be sporting a new kit for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

The USWNT’s new uniform, designed by Nike, was unveiled on Wednesday. It will be worn only for the Olympics, with the team set to resume wearing their usual kits after the competition ends.

The biggest change on the new uniforms is the removal of the US Soccer crest, which was replaced by blue “USA” lettering. The Olympic charter mandates that no federation crests are allowed on uniforms. The “USA” lettering will appear on the left crest of the shirt and the right hem of the short.

Apart from the removal of the crest, the USWNT’s black away jerseys will remain the same.

The white home uniforms underwent a bigger change, with the home kit’s blue sleeves replaced with platinum-colored sleeves embedded with metallic threads. A blue stripe and a red stripe run down the length of the shirt and matching white shorts on the left and right side, respectively. The socks for the home kit are also new – they gradually fade from white at the top to blue at the bottom.

The USWNT have won four of the five Olympic gold medals that have been contested in women’s soccer. They’re looking this summer to become the first country to win an Olympic title the year after winning the Women’s World Cup.

The US were drawn into Group G at the Olympics. They’ll open the tournament against New Zealand on August 3 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, remaining in the city to take on France on August 6 before facing off with Colombia in Manaus on August 9.
