USMNT's Jurgen Klinsmann names 13 MLS players to 22-man roster for Wednesday's friendly vs. Mexico

USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann cracks a smile

The US national team roster for Wednesday’s friendly against Mexico will be very MLS-heavy, with manager Jurgen Klinsmann calling 13 players from the league on Sunday to his 22-man roster for the midweek match in San Antonio.

The LA Galaxy, the New England Revolution and Real Salt Lake all had two players named to the US roster, with LA sending defender Omar Gonzalez and forward Gyasi Zardes, New England sending forward Juan Agudelo and midfielder Lee Nguyen, and midfielder Kyle Beckerman and goalkeeper Nick Rimando representing RSL.

D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid, Seattle’s Brad Evans, Orlando’s Brek Shea, Sporting KC’s Matt Besler, Toronto's Michael Bradley, NYCFC’s Mix Diskerud and San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski are the other seven MLS call-ups.

It's the third-straight call-up for OCSC left back Shea, who already has two goals in just for matches with the USMNT in 2015.

Two players will make the long trek from Europe to Texas for the match, with former Seattle Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin – fresh off his Tottenham debut – and Hamburg winger Julian Green set to cross the Atlantic. Sounders academy forward Jordan Morris, still a student at Stanford University, was also called in.

Five others will head north from Mexico, with recent USMNT debutants goalkeeper William Yarbrough and defender Ventura Alvarado getting another call and Joe Corona, Michael Orozco and Greg Garza filling out the Liga MX contigent.

UPDATE: After discussions with his club, Puebla, Orozco was taken off the roster on Monday for Wednesday's match. He was replaced by D.C. United midfielder Perry Kitchen, the 14th MLS player to be called for the contest.

Neither Seattle Sounders star Clint Dempsey nor Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore were called in for the match, with Dempsey missing due to a hamstring injury suffered last week and Altidore out after seeing a red card in the US's last match, a 1-1 draw at Switzerland last month.

Mexico unveiled their 19-man roster last week, with Houston Dynamo forward Erick “Cubo” Torres – currently on loan at Chivas Guadalajara – and former Real Salt Lake defender Carlos Salcedo – who moved to Chivas this winter – both earning calls to Miguel Herrera's side.
