First-year head coach Marc Dos Santos continues to shape the Vancouver Whitecaps in the leadup to the 2019 MLS regular season, wrapping up the Hawai'i segment of their preseason with a game (technically the Pacific Rim Cup's third-place match) against unfamiliar opposition from Japan's lower divisions.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
The new-look Whitecaps fell 3-1 to J2 League side V-Varen Nagasaki on Friday in their first Pacific Rim Cup match, also Dos Santos' VWFC sideline debut. David Norman Jr. netted a late consolation goal for the 'Caps, heading home a corner-kick delivery from fellow academy product Simon Colyn.
Still missing some of their most recent signings, Vancouver chopped and changed their lineup at halftime, mixing in plenty of young players, though the starters are expected to get slightly longer runs on Sunday as the march towards full match fitness rolls on.
Iwaki FC
A small club with big ambitions for the future, the Fukushima-based side currently play in the sixth tier of Japanese pro soccer but are eager to build their name and climb the pyramid. They gave Real Salt Lake a spirited challenge on Friday, snatching a second-half equalizer off a Justen Glad error before leaking a late winner from Nick Beslerin a 2-1 final result.
